Amazon's Elastic Block Store (EBS) can be used as block level storage volumes for your Amazon EC2 instances. An EBS Volume functions as a network-attached form of block level storage that persists independently from a Server's (Instance's) life. EBS Storage Volumes offer high availability, increased reiabilityreliability, and predictability and can be attached to a running Server as well as exposed as a device within the Server. This Amazon Cloud Services feature is a great choice for any application requiring a database or file system and works well when access to raw block level storage is required. To learn more, please refer to the Amazon Elastic Book Store page.

To manage your EBS Volumes, go to Main Menu > AWS > EBS Volumes.

EBS Snapshots

EBS Snapshots are incremental backups. With this Amazon storage feature, only the blocks that have changed since the last created snapshot are saved. For example, if a device has 100 GBs of data, but only 5 GBs of data has changed, only those 5 GBs of the snapshot data are stored back to Amazon S3. If a snapshot is deleted, only unnecesary unnecessary data for the other snapshots is removed. Active snapshots contain all information needed to restore a volume regardless of what snapshots have been previously deleted. The time required to restore a volume remains the same for every snapshot thus providing the restore time of a full backup and the space savings offered by incremental saves.
